Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at FOUCAUCOURT on 27th Aug., 1918. In the face of a heavy artillery and machine gun barrage Gnr. GUNSELL advanced with the attacking infantry carrying wire and telephone and helped to maintain communication with the Artillery, thereby enabling them to engage and destroy machine gun posts and strong pointswhich were holding up our advance - thus considerably reducing our infantry casualties. He repeatedly patrolled the lines and mended breaks in the wires under heavy fire. Throughout the whole day's operation he displayed great courage and determination, and an utter disregard for his own safety.'
