Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Ascanius', 25 October 1916; disembarked Devonport, 28 December 1916; marched into 5th Training Battalion, Rollestone, 29 December 1916. Proceeded to France through Folkestone on SS 'Invieta', 15 February 1917; marched into 2nd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 16 February 1917; joined 18th Battalion in the field, 23 February 1917.

Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 October 1917, and transferred to 44th Casualty Clearing Station (shrapnel wound, face); to Ambulance Train '12', 9 October 1917, and admitted to 83rd General Hospital, Boulogne, 11 October 1917. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'St. Andrew'and proceeded to England for further treatment, 19 October 1917; admitted to Cambridge Hospital, Aldershot, 20 October 1917; transferred to Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, 10 November 1917; granted sick leave, 7 November 1918; returned to hospital, 8 January 1919; granted sick leave, 10 February 1919; returned to hospital, 24 February 1919; discharged on furlough, 1 March 1919. Marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 10 March 1919.

Embarked Avonmouth on HT 'Shropshire' and commenced return to Australia, 1 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 16 May 1919, for onward travel to the 2nd Military District. Discharged on account of being medically unfit for continued service, Sydney, 8 September 1920.
