'On the 13th October, 1917, east of WESTHOEK whilst the 31st Battery position was being heavily shelled by a hostile 8S Howitzer Battery a direct hit smashed a pillbox and severely wounded three men who occupied it. No. 15066 Gunner Robert HADDOCK, 113th Battery, immediately volunteered to get out under this heavy fire and succeeded with the assistance of the other men, in getting the three wounded to a place of safety. Gunner HADDOCK made three trips into the pillbox in his efforts to rescue the men and in doing so showed a total disregard of personal safety. He had many very narrow escapes from bursting shells. His courage and splendid example are deserving of special recognition.'
