'On the morning of the 11th April 1917 near BULLECOURT this Non Commissioned Officer was in charge of a Vickers Gun. throughout the operation he displayed conspicuous gallantry in keeping his gun in action. On command to retire being given, he took charge of his gun, and carried it back to safety through an intense machine gun and rifle fire barrage. On the way back the remaining man of his gun's crew was wounded shortly after leaving the trench but Private HAINES without thinking of himself took charge of both gun and wounded man and saw both into safety. Immediately on arrival at Sunken Road he again mounted his gun using ammunition boxes for tripod and was in position in readiness for any further attack by the enemy. This man has always displayed a most soldierly bearing throughout all our operations and such a deed as this is worthy of high consideration. he is hereby recommended for highly distinguished conduct.'
