'On 30th August 1918 this N.C.O. worked with his squad under a very heavy barrage in front of the village of VILLERS CARBONNEL South of PERONNE evacuating some 18 - 20 cases under the greatest difficulties and personal risk. His forgetfulness of his own safety and his capacity to carry on under circumstances of the most intense danger and distraction served as a fine example to his comrades and greatly assisted the speedy evacuation of wounded from a position of great danger to them.'
