Proceeded overseas to France, 4 September 1917; taken on strength, as Sapper, 2nd Division Signal Company, 9 September 1917.

Admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, 22 September 1917 (not yet diagnosed), and transferred to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station; to 4th Stationary Hospital, Arques, 24 September 1917; now, 24 September 1917, diagnosed as 'fatigue'; discharged to unit, 28 September 1917; rejoined unit, Belgium, 7 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 30 October 1917 (gassed), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, and then to Ambulance Train No 20, 31 October 1917, and admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville (gassed shell); transferred to England, 10 November 1917, and admitted to Whipps Hospital, Leytonstone, 11 November 1917; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 3 December 1917; discharged on furlough, 7 January 1918, to report to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 21 January 1918.

Discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 21 February 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Marathon', 15 April 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 12 June 1918; discharged (medically unfit: general debility and gassed), Melbourne, 15 August 1918.
