'Near ZONNEBEKE on 25th October, 1917 L/Cpl. HAMBLY displayed great bravery and coolness in rescuing a wounded comrade. This N..C.O. was on night patrol and out approximately 1000 yards from Battalion front line posts when his patrol suddenly came under heavy rifle fire from an enemy post L/Cpl. HAMBLY went to the assistance of a wounded comrade and at the greatest personal risk led and carried his comrade over marshy ground and shell holes back to safety. His action undoubtedly saved his comrade from being captured by the enemy.'
