War service: Egypt, Western Front Disembarked Suez, 28 February 1916. Taken on strength, 60th Bn, Duntroon Plateau, 20 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported missing in Action, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1250503: 'No trace Germany. Cert. by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 52669 2nd Air Mechanic A.B. CRAIG, RFC, 12 November 1917: 'I saw Herbert Hamilton last July in Hospital at a place pronounced "HUNGSTUNGERAH" near Dorp, Germany. He told me that he came from corner of Gibb and Charles Street, Abbotsford, Victoria, he said he had written some letters but had received no replies. His right leg was off above the knee. This information is supplied voluntarily, I having escaped from Germany.' |
