War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength, 60th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 28 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, france, 29 June 1916. Reported missing in Action, 19 July 1916. Court of enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1250902: 'No trace Germany. Cert. by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 2888 Pte F.J. TALBOT, B Company, 60th Bn, 21 May 1917: 'I saw Hammond killed in No Man's Land at Fleurbaix on July 19th, '16. He was killed by a shell which practically tore off his head. I do not know what became of the body as I was wounded and left the field immediately after.' Second statement, 2688 Pte F.J. TALBOT, 60th Bn, 19 July 1917: 'I was in the charge on the 19.7.16 with Pte W.H. Hammond of the 60th Btn and saw him get killed by a shell in No Man's Land.
