War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to join 14th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 4 March 1916. Transferred to, and taken on strength of, 12th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 45th Battery as Gunner, 16 March 1916. Transferred to Artillery Training Depot, 2 June 1916. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 4 June 1916: when on Active Service committing an offence against the country in which he was serving in that he at Cairo on 27.5.16 attempted an indecent assault on a native woman: found 'Not Guilty'. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 August 1916; disembarked England (date not recorded). Proceeded overseas to France, 6 September 1916; taken on strength, 25th Field Artillery Brigade, in the field, and posted to 60th Battery, 11 September 1916. Transferred to 14th Field Artillery Brigade, 24 January 1917. Admitted to 1/1 South Midlands Field Ambulance, 20 June 1917 (pyrexia, unknown origin), and transferred to 29th Casualty Clearing Station; to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 26 June 1917; to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 21 July 1917; to No 11 Convalescent Depot, Buchy, 25 July 1917; to Base Depot, Havre, 2 September 1917. Found guilty, Buchy, 1 September 1917, of when on Active Service disobedience of No 11 Convalescent Depot Routine Order : out of bounds without a pass: awarded 7 days' confined to camp. Found guilty, Havre 16 October 1917, of (1) drunkenness; (2) being out of bounds, 14 October: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Transferred to England, 4 November 1917; marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 November 1917.
