''For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer led the right assulting party in a raid on the enemy trenches, handling his men with great gallantry and conspicuous skilll, which was responsible for the success of the enterprise. Under his capable leadership much execution was done among the enemy, though a hand-to-hand resistance was encountered at some points. His resolute leadership and personal courage enabled him to complete the operation promptly and thoroughly, with an unexpectedly small number of casualties.''
