'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As he was not able to get a good position for his Lewis gun, he stood up and fired it from the hip, all the time under frontal and enfilade fire, until the attack was driven off. He afterwards advanced 20 yards with his gun and cleared out some snipers.'
