'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during several days of severe fighting, when he displayed the greatest courage, skill and determination in handling his guns. On one occasion, late in the operations, the enemy broke through a portion of the line, and it was largely due to his disposition that the advance was stopped on that sector with heavy loss to the enemy.'
