Military Medal 'At POLYGON WOOD on 26th September, 1917, telephone communication broke down early in the day, and runners had to be used exclusively. Many runners became casualties, so that those remaining had to work very hard. During the whole of 26th and 27th September, Private HANNAFORD carried numerous messages through heavy enemy barrages and machine gun fire, and on two occasions through a gas shell barrage. On 27th September, our own heavy artillery shelled us, and Private HANNAFORD carried a message through our own and the enemy's barrage to have the artilleries shooting rectified.'
