Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When, during our advance, his section was held up by the fire of a machine gun, he charged the gun position single handed, killing the detachment and capturing the gun. By the fearless promptitude of his action he saved the lives of his men who were advancing on the position, and his example of courage and devotion made a deep impression on all around him.'
