Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Demosthenes', 18 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, 20 July 1916; promoted to Leading Sergeant, 20 October 1916. Proceeded overseas to France through Southampton, 24 November 1916; promoted to Sergeant, 5 February 1917.

Admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, 23 February 1917 (gun shot wound, right thigh, left foot and calf); transferred to 5th Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 24 February 1917; to Ambulance Train '10', 24 February 1917; admitted to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 25 February 1917. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'St. Denis' and proceeded to England for further treatment, 2 March 1917; admitted to Edmonton Military Hospital, 2 March 1917; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 6 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 4 December 1917. Marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 9 December 1917; admitted to 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester, 9 December 1917; transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 2 March 1918; discharged on furlough, 7 March 1918.
