Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 1 September 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916.' Statement, Red Cross File No 1270314, 2829 Corporal J.J. PARNELL, 58th Bn, 15 January 1917: 'I was alongside Hargreaves when we went over the top on that date. That was the last I saw of him. A man called Kiddle [aka 2491 Pte M.W. KEDDELL] who has just gone up again to join the Bn, told me that he heard Hargreaves afterwards shouting for help in No mans (sic) land. Kiddle could not tell whether Hargreaves was shouting for help for himself or for another man, but as he himself was wounded he could not go to Hargreaves (sic) assistance. It was at this time that Maj. Hutchinson who had command of the first wave, decided to order a rush back to our trenches and was himself killed in the retreat.' Second statement, 2491 Pte M.W. KEDDELL, B Company, 58th Bn (patient, Woodcote Park Hospital, England), 28 September 1916: 'In the Fleurbaix advance, Hargreves was lying wounded a few yards from informant (also wounded). Informant called out to Hargreaves, who replied. Later he heard him ask someone to bandage his wounds.' Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal |
