Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For gallantry at Nauroy on the night 2-3 October, 1918. He took an urgent message, under heavy fire, in darkness for batteries to move forward. His delivery of this important message, under great difficulties, caused the batteries to provide the necessary artillery fire for the capture of Montbrehain.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 35 Date: Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on the morning of 16th April, 1916, at BRESLE. At 1.30 a.m. Gunner BANNER, a runner, alone delivered very urgent despatches to the four batteries ot his Brigade. The night was pitch dark and Gunner BANNER had to pass through heavy enemy shell fire. The prompt delivery of the despatches enabled the Batteries to fire in a most important operation. This man has been a runner for twelve months and on many previous occasions has bravely carried out his duties under heavy fire and has never failed to deliever a despatch.'
