'During the Battalion's first tour in trenches near POZIERES he on several occasions volunteered and went out with Regimental Stretcher Bearers into No Man's Land to collect wounded. During operations 29th to 31st August, 1916, after working very hard at R.A.P. he went along front line which was being heavily shelled, to attend wounded who had been collected in a dug out and brought them to Regimental Aid Post.'
