'Near Hermes, on 15th-16th September, 1918, he was in charge of teams and ammunition waggons returing to our lines, when his column came suddenly under heavy shell fire, two men and five horses being killed and several wounded. With the utmost coolness and disregard of danger he at once set to work to straighten out the confusion and get the remainder of the teams safely away, while he himself remained on the spot bandaging and attending to the wounded. He set an admirable example of gallantry and devotion to duty to all his men.
