War service: embarked Sydney, 11 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 30 January 1917. Admitted to Tidworth Military Hospital, 2 February 1917 (ingrown toe nail). Proceeded overseas to France, 29 March 1917; marched into Segregation Camp, Etaples, 4 April 1917; taken on strength, 5th Field Ambulance, 20 May 1917. Wounded in action, 2 November 1917 (shrapnel wound, left leg); admitted to 53rd General Hospital, Boulogen, 3 November 1917; transferred to England, 15 November 1917, and admitted to 1st Birmingham War Hospital, 16 November 1917; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 17 December 1917; discharged on furlough, 27 December 1917, to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 10 January 1918. Found guilty, 16 January 1918, of being absent without leave from 3.30 pm, 10 January, to 3 pm, 14 January 1918: awarded 7 days confined to camp; forfeited 5 days pay. Appointed Acting Sergeant, 15 March 1918. Marched out to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 31 August 1918.Reverted to Private, 17 June 1918.
