'During the operations at Peronne, on 1st and 21nd September, 1918, when his company was held up at the bridge-head, he at once grasped the necessity of the situation and organized his men for an assault, which he carried out with complete success, in spite of heavy machine gun fire. In the town itself he rendered admirable service in accounting for the last elements of the enemy's resistance, inflicting heavy casualties and capturing many prisoners. His gallantry and energy were conspicuous examples, which greatly inspired all ranks.''
