'During the operations near POLYGON WOOD east of YPRES on morning of 20th September, 1917, this N.C.O. showed great initiative and personal gallantry in rushing a German Machine Gun which was holding up the advance. He personally accounted for five of the Germans who were manning the machine gu. Throughout the operations he displayed initiative and gallantry of a high order.'
