War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Adelaide, 18 November 1915; disembarked suez, 18 December 1915. Transferred to 5th Division Artillery, Tel el Kebir, 15 March 1916, taken on strength, 14th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 54th Battery. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 7 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 15 June 1916. Tried by District Court Martial, 11 August 1916, on charge of disobeying in such a manner as to show defiance of authority and lawful command given personally by his superior officer in the execution of his duty - drunkenness; pleaded guilty; found guilty: awarded 40 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of a total of 43 days' pay. Found guilty of being absent without leave from his billet from 8.30 till 11.30, 30 September 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Admitted to 45th Casualty Clearing Station, 21 November 1916 (myalgia); transferred to 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 23 November 1916; to England, 24 November 1916, and admitted to 3rd Western General Hospital, 26 November 1916; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 11 December 1916; discharged, and marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 December 1916. Commenced return to Australia from Plymouth on board HT 'Barambah', 15 April 1917 (myalgia); discharged (medically unfit), Adelaide, 24 August 1917.
