War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to No. 4 Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 12 February 1916 (mumps); discharged to duty, 2 March 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 8 June 1916. Wounded in action, 7 August 1916 (struck on his steel helmet by shrapnel, making a hole in it and striking him on the left side of his forehead, leaving him dazed. The following day he suffered an epileptic fit, with a further attack on 12 August.). Transferred to England on board HS 'St George', 14 August 1916; admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, 15 August 1916. Discharged to Ludgers Hall, 26 September 1916.
