Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a company. During an advance under heavy machine gun fire against a strongly entrenched enemy position, all his officers became casualties. He reorganied his company in the open, pushed on, established himself in the position and held it in the face of severe enemy opposition. The success of the operation was chiefly due to his initiative, courage, and devotion.'

Other details

War Service: Egypt, Western Front. Medals: Military Cross, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, VIctory Medal. Served in France. Was wounded at Poziers (schrapnel to the head) - 23 July 1916. 18 December 1917, Belgium. Critically wounded on 17 April 1918. A piece of jagged shrapnel went through left shoulder and lodged close to his heart. Evacuated to London where the King's Surgeon examined him and decided not to operate because of the danger. He carried schrapnel for the rest of his life. At the conclusion of the war Captain Hay remained in England. He departed for Australia on the "Ulysses" on 27 December 1919.
