'Showed conspicuous gallantry during the attack on enemy north of FLINT COPSE on the 9th October. He dashed forward in advance of his comrades and bombed the first enemy strong point captured. The 6 enemy survivors of the bombing surrendered and were despatched to the rear by this man. He then went forward and assisted in taking the remainder of the sap. The immediate success at this point was due to the confidence inspired in Pte HAYDEN's comrades by his dash.'
