Military Medal 'On 25th April 1918 North of CACHY, near VILLERS BRETONNEUX this N.C.O. was in charge of the bearers clearing wounded from the R.A.P.s. Re-adjustment of the bearers at the different posts was repeatedly necessary in consequence of the development of the line of evacuation. Sergeant HAYES did invaluable work - constantly patrolling the different posts, he kept his officers well informed of the details of the situation and he showed great initiative in carrying out any necessary re-arrangement. His duty constantly kept him in the open in the heavily shelled parts of the forward area. His keenness energy and courage formed a splendid example to his men. The successful evacuation of wounded was largely dependent upon his personal efforts.'
