Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack on a village. Seeing a unit on the left flank held up by rifle and machine gun fire, he took a patrol of five men across the river, and by skilful leadership succeeded in locating and rushing several enemy posts, capturing or killing the garrisons and clearing up the area in front of the right flank of the attacking troops for a considerable distance. In particular he rushed one strong post, capturing one officer, thirty one other ranks and seven machine guns. Altogether his party accounted for one officer, seventy one other ranks, and nine machine guns. He did splendid work and showed great courage and initiative.'
