Sapper HAYES showed marked courage and determination in mending lines and maintaining communications between Batteries and Brigade Headquarters in the attack. As the Batteries moved forward in support of the infantry advance the rear areas were subjected to constantly heavy shell fire causing continual breaks in the line. He patrolled the lines and with the exception of short interruptions maintained communcations throughout. He showed a splendid example of courage and resource.'
