No. 1165 Gunner HAZELWOOD was ordered to accomplish a certain number of trips with his pack mules. On one of the early trips a shell burst close to his and killed one mule and wounded the other and he himself was blown into a shell hole and severely shaken. Just as he was recovering he saw 2 mules without an owner which he caught. being unsuccessful in finding the owner and realising the urgency for bringing the ammunition up to his Battery he proceeded though considerable shaken, to complete delivery with his captured mules. His pluck and resource are deserving of special consideration. Awarded Military Medal 2nd October, 1917.'
