'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He gathered together a number of men and formed a strong point. He worked one of the Lewis guns himself and held on in spite of many casualties and although himself wounded until ordered to withdraw to the new lines. He brought his men back to the billeting area, and only on the following day reported himself wounded.'
