'During the advance at JEANCOURT, on 18th September, 1918, Lance Corporal HEFFERNAN, who moved forward throughout with the attacking Companies, was in charge of a Battalion forward Observation post, and showed great daring and courage in the selection of the O.P. He kept Battalion Headquarters well informed as to the progress of the action, and guided many parties in the correct direction. His work continually took him into the enemy barrage, and eventually he was wounded in the left elbow by a bullet; nothwithstanding this he continued to carry out his work until the conclusion of the advance.'
