'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under very heavy shell fire on the YPRES MENIN Road on 25th September, 1917. He was continuously on post, controlling traffic in the danger zone and under heavy shell fire. He set a splendid example and was instrumental in saving lorries loaded with munitions from being destroyed by shell fire, and no doubt many lives.'
