War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to join 14th Bn, 4 March 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, 15 March 1916; taken on strength, Tel el Kebir, Tel el Kebir, 17 March 1916. Found guilty, Ferry Post, 4 April 1916, of disobedience of orders whilst on line of march: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported Missing, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1310801: 'No trace Germany. Cert. by Capt. Mills. 10.10.19.' Statement, 2479 Pte R.W. HILL, 60th Bn (patient, No 8 Stationary hospital, Boulogne), 30 September 1916: 'On July 21st about 6.45 p.m. the 60th made a charge at Pozieres. Informant got wounded and managed to crawl to within 30 yds of the parapet of our lines. There he lay waiting to be brought in, which did not happen till the following afternoon. Henderson was lying wounded in the neck near informant. He managed to crawl into our trench, some hours before informant was brought in.
