Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed the greatest coolness and courage on two critical occasions, when his company had been caught in the open. He also worked at the consolidation of a position for three days under heavy shell fire, successfully completing the task. His personal reconnaissane reports from the front line were most valuable.'

This officer, in command of a flank company in the front line advanced his line to a point about 300 yards forward under heavy fire, but so effectively did he dispose his covering party that the remainder of the company was able to dig in with very few casualties. At dawn next morning he learnt that the unit on his right had withdrawn, so he had to go and adjust his posts to make a defensive flank, which he did under heavy fire, being severely wounded just as his task was completed.'
