War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Alexandria, 6 June 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 16 June 1916. Appointed Acting Corporal, 23 July 1917; reverted to the ranks, 12 September 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 23 October 1917; taken on strength, 32nd Bn, in the field, 1 November 1917. Admitted to 5th Division Rest Station, 15 January 1918 (neuralgis, defective vision); rejoined Bn, in the field, 22 January 1918. Wounded in action, 4 May 1918 (mustard gas burns), and admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance and transferred to 61st Casualty Clearing Station; to 41st Stationary Hospital, 5 May 1918; to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville, 6 May 1918; to England, 11 May 1918, and admitted same day to Whipps Cross War Hospital, Leytonstone (affiliated with Colchester Military Hospital); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 27 May 1918; discharged on furlough, 29 May 1918, to report to No 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 12 June 1918.
