Military Medal 'During Operations by 29th Battalion at VAUVILLERS on 9th August 1918. Private HIGGIE was in charge of a Lewis Gun. When his village was ultimately captured after very strenuous fighting Private HIGGIE took his Gun well forward in the face of point blank enemy artillery fire. he manoeuvred his Gun into a position from where he could bring fire to bear on the enemy crew serving one of their field pieces, and succeeded in forcing them to retire from the Gun, in spite of the heavy Machine Gun fire which was brought to bear on him from concealed positions. Through the prompt action of Private HIGGIE there is no doubt that heavy casualties were prevented from being inflicted on our troops. He displayed great skill and coolness in handling his Lewis Gun on his own initiative.'
