Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid against the enemy defences North East of SAILLY-le-SEC, South West of ALBERT, on 4th July 1918. Early in the fight Private HIGGS' section leader fell wounded, and Private HIGGS, realising the importance of leadership at such a time, took command, and led his men to their objective. During the advance his party came under heavy trench mortar and machine gun fire, Private HIGGS, who set a fine example of coolness and disregard of danger. In the final assault Private HIGGS accounted for two of the enemy with his bayonet.'
