'During operations east of PROYART ON 23rd/26th August, 1918, Private HILL rendered valuable assistane by his pluck and initiative. As No. 1 Lewis gunner during the attack east of CARENNE WOOD he gallently rushed his gun forward over an open stretch of country swept by Machine Gun fire and gave covering fire which enabled the flanking company to send men forward in small parties and eventually rush and take the post.'
