Sailed for England on 11 August 1916; trained at Codford Camp, Salisbury Plain. Joined his unit in France, and fought at Pozieres, Bullecourt, Bapaume etc. Wounded at Bullecourt, 11 April 1917; sent to hospital in England, recovered sufficiently after 3 months to be able to return to his unit.
