Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was a Company Runner throughout an important operation conducted by his Battalion on the 4th/6th April, 1918, and carried messages continually, during both daylight and night, across open country which was swept by heavy machine gun and rifle fire. His judgment and initiative made him an indispensable runner where there were no other means of communication, and he responded with a disregard both of danger and of fatigue.'
