'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917 he set a splendid example to his men, and gave considerable assistance to his officers during the consolidation. An enemy sniper was effectively sniping our troops whilst they were digging - Corporal HITCHCOCK went out under heavy fire and shot this sniper. At all times he showed utter disregard for personal safety.'
