Military Medal 'In front of FLEURBAIX on the night 30th September/1st October, 1916, this N.C.O. participated in a raid on a strong point in the German trenches north of BAS MAISNIL. He showed conspicuous bravery in a fight with a German whilst in the trenches of the enemy. This Hun attacked HITCHENOR with rifle and bayonet, the latter only having a revolver. He fired and wounded the Hun, who then closed with him and after a struggle HITCHENOR killed him with the butt end of his revolver. His prompt action in dealing with this German set an excellent example.'
