'During the operations against the Hindenberg Line on night of 3rd/4th May 1917, this N.C.O. maintained communication from 5th Australian Infantry Brigade forward under a continuous fire. This NC.O. has been a linesman for eighteen months and his gallantry and continued devotion to duty has been an example of the greatest value.'
