'For gallantry and devotion to duty at STRAZEELE on 18th April, 1918. During the advance of his Company, when the Platoon Officer and the Platoon Sergeant had become casualties, Lance Corporal HOARE took charge of his platoon and continued the attack; entering the enemy trenches, killing several Germans and taking three prisoners. He held the trench until ordered to fall back in line with other platoons. By his gallant coolness and initiative he set a splendid example to his comrades.'
