Proceeded to France, early 1916 [date illegible on form B.130] to join British Expeditionary Force.

With unit, 2nd Field Company Engineers, in the field in France, 1 January 1917. Admitted sick to hospital, 7 February 1917 (cough); rejoined unit, 16 February 1917.

Transferred to Royal Flying Corps, England, 30 April 1917. Taken on strength, Australian Flying Corps Depot, Perham Downs, 3 May 1917; appointed 2nd Air Mechanic and mustered as coppersmith, 6 June 1917; attached to 29th Training Squadron, AFC, 15 June 1917. Marched in to 29th Training Squadron from course of instruction, Langham Place, London, 10 September 1917; marched in to AFC Training Depot, Wendover, from 29th Training Squadron, 13 September 1917; marched out to 29th Training Squadron, 6 September 1918. Transferred to 5th Training Squadron, 3 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Kaiser-i-Hind', 6 May 1919; disembarked, 16 June 1919; discharged, 8 August 1919.
