'During the attack East of VILLERS BRETONNEUX, near AMIENS, on the morning of 8th August 1918, this man was wounded on the jumping off line. He was No. 1 of a Lewis Gun team, and insisted on going forward. He took his gun and used it to good effect. Although bleeding freely, he continued with the leading wave, and on one occasion, when owing to the fog and smoke, an enemy machine gun firing could not be located, he went forward into our barrage, found the position, and silenced the gun.'
