Military Medal

'For especially gallant conduct and devotion to duty during the recent advance, east of EACOURT L'ABBYE during the period 24th February to 3rd March, 1917, whilst in charge of the Battalion Intelligence platoon, which reconnoitred NO MAN'S LAND prior to the advance. Particularly, for a daring reconnaissance on the night of 24th February, 1917, when he personally reconnoitred the enemy's position, and brought back information which was extremely valuable, and not previously available. His reports were subsequently verified in every detail by the attacking party.'

Bar to Military Medal

'During the operations East of YPRES on 20th/23rd September 1917 this N.C.O. as Battalion Intelligence Sergeant was made responsible with an Officer and one other rank for the important work of laying the tapes on which the Battalion were to form up prior to zero hour. This was done successfully two nights previously to the assembly. He assisted to guide the Battalion into position and on the opening of the barrage pushed forward to gain information and identifications. At all times he displayed great coolness and courage.'
