Military Medal 'For great gallantry in the field and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer. Always first to answer the call of his comrades. Stopping at nothing to get the wounded back to the aid post - this had to be done right across the open. he did fine work on the night 22nd/23rd February 1917 in getting the wounded back to GRASS LANE near GUEUDECOURT although having to pass through heavy artillery barrage.'
